Summary:The article brings the scenario of Distance Education in Brazil, presenting its expansion in offerings of courses and numbers of students enrolled. It points out that, at the center of this expansion are undergraduate courses and the need to overcome the exclusively instrumental use of digital resources, towards media literacy. The objective of the article is to discuss the influences and relationships of digital information and communication technologies and Distance Education in teacher education. How can these factors contribute to pedagogical innovation, based on a humanizing perspective of education? With a theoretical framework built on authors who are based on the need for critical and creative use of digital information and communication technologies, the authors dialogue with pedagogical innovation and media literacy to promote a promising scenario for distance education.
