Description
Summary:The constitutive contact force law utilized to describe contact-impact events plays a crucial role in predicting the dynamic response of mechanical systems and simulation of the engineering applications. This paper studies the influence of the use of different contact force models on the simulation of the dynamic response of multibody systems. Most common con-tinuous elastic and dissipative contact force models are examined and their performances are evaluated. The contact force models are used for the simulation of a bouncing ball problem as well as a multibody system encountering external frictionless impacts. The dynamic analyses of some different systems indicate that the prediction of the dynamic behavior of hard and soft contacting surfaces strongly depends on the selection of the contact force model.
