Resumo:Hospital assistance was the main concern of the Brotherhoods and Tertiary Orders in Porto during the Ancien Régime. The building of hospitals, relying on the generosity of the directors of the institutions and on public benevolence, dragged on for many years. The example of the Hospital do Terço, which took more than 130 years to build, allows us to understand the flows of public generosity and to locate hospital areas according to the social and medical practices of the time.
