Summary: | This article aims at studying the exemption of the Portuguese monastery of San Salvador of Grijó during the twelfth century. By the analysis of the privileges of Innocent II, Lucius II, Eugene III and Celestine III, we will show on the one hand how the monastery’s exemption was the result of the interaction between the canons of Grijó, the bishops of Porto, Braga, Coimbra and the Papacy. On the other, we will illustrate how the monastery, despite the exemption, remained under the power of order of the diocesan ordinary. |
