Summary:The present work is motivated by the study of the Program and operation for the modernization of school architecture in Portugal. In the first instance, the concepts of rehabilitation and heritage are analyzed, as well as the understanding of the intervention method in buildings with a monument character, and also those with impact and methodologies brought to school intervention. All secondary schools that were submitted to this intervention, affirmed a positive condition to be rehabilitated, regardless of the patrimonial values that those buildings transmit. Through the implementation of the Parque Escolar' Program, the public school' building affirms the possibility of being nationally recognized by its' cultural and heritage values. Starting from pedagogical, urban, social, cultural, economic, architectural and technical factors, the school field evolves at the same time, still trying to maintain its identity. The school is, therefore, a determining value in urban organization and public buildings of reference. As a public institution, it reflects throughout its lifespan and throughout its transformations, social, political, pedagogical and cultural concerns of each era in which it is inserted, both in terms of its organization, as well as in its representation and preservation of certain moments that integrate the school space.
