Resumo:The geological and geomorphological characteristics of Lisbon are presented and linked with city settlement and development. The population and infrastructure concentration make Lisbon more vulnerable to geomorphological hazards. Important geomorphological disasters affected the city in the past and were responsible for significant transformations in land use giving rise to new landforms. The 1755 earthquake and the São Jorge Castle and the Santa Catarina earthquake-induced landslides are presented as major disasters.
