Resumo:Located in the north of Portugal, Alto Minho is a region where folk singing is mostly performed in the oral tradition. Their voices are recognized by their high pitched, loud and “strident” characteristics, which determine their folk group’s regional identity. This study aims to: (i) describe acoustic properties of this singing style; and (ii) identify which of these features may predict the level of representativeness of the cantadeiras’ voice. 10 soloist cantadeiras from the Viana do Castelo district were recorded interpreting a well-known song from the Alto Minho folk repertoire. Thereafter, 72 members of several folk groups from the same region perceptually assessed their voices in a listening test, measuring how typical they were according to Alto Minho folk singing. Several acoustic and physiologic measures were taken, and the statistic relation between them and the level of representativeness of their voices was studied. Results show that cantadeiras with most typical voices have: (i) high levels of intensity; (ii) high subglottal pressure; (iii) a higher quotient of vocal fold contact; and (iv) a predominance of high energy in higher partials of the sound spectrum.
