Há várias teorias, mas uma delas era de que um dos negócios de eleição para os investimentos da máfia norte-americana e internacional, eram as lavandarias. O dinheiro era proveniente de diversos crimes como a extorsão, o tráfico de álcool, drogas e armas ilegais. Assim, o “dinheiro sujo” passaria a estar limpo, apresentando uma aparência de licitude, legalidade.
