Summary: | Portugal has a great tradition in the usage of glued ceramic tiles on facade covering, which is a system of high durability when correctly conceived and applied. However, there are buildings constructed in the last decades that do not exhibit the expected performance, as many pathologies, such as "blistering" and precocious detachments in recent buildings, have been reported. It is therefore fundamental that, in the next years, there is an effort in the rehabilitation of such cases. On the other hand, Portugal has been facing a growing evolution of electrical energy consumption in buildings, with a big percentage in climatization. It is also evident that most of construction does not meet the minimum requirements for a greater rationalization of energy consumption, hence being unavoidable to make progress in that direction. The rehabilitation of these facades can thus be achieved both by the original method of glued ceramic covering or by the adoption of novel solutions designed to increase its thermal resistance and improve the buildings' interior comfort, such as systems comprising external thermal covering. Although these solutions may require, in some cases, a higher initial investment, in the long term they should fasten its amortization, as they will reduce the energetic needs by lowering energy consumption, whose cost tends to rise.
