Summary:This study compared the social functioning and quality of life in a sample of institutionalized and non-institutionalized patients suffering from schizophrenia. For this purpose, 18 schizophrenic patients were randomly selected, 9 from a Day Care Centre and 9 institutionalized in Centro Hospitalar Conde de Ferreira. Regarding social functioning, and contrary to the study hypothesis, significant differences between the two groups were only found in four of the 19 domains assessed.On the contrary, significant differences were found between the two groups in all aspects regarding quality of life. Implications of the findings are discussed.
