Summary: | Júlio Machado de Sousa Vaz (1909-1999) was a notorious Professor of "Bacteriology and Parasitology" at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oporto. He graduated in Medicine in 1932 and received his PhD in 1940. In 1956, he assumed the regency of "Bacteriology and Parasitology" and, in 1959, the direction of the Laboratory of Bacteriology and Hygiene and the regency of "Hygiene and Social Medicine". In 1960, he assumed the position of Full Professor. He was Director of the Clinical Analysis Service of "Hospital Escolar de São João" and a member of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Advocate of democratic ideologies, he loved university education, Bacteriology and Culture.
